VITAL TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR DECK AND PORCH SAFE AND BEAUTIFUL

Most Ohioans love to spend time on their decks and porches with our long days and warmer temperatures. And in the spring and summer, buyers look at these outdoor spaces when making their home purchase decision.

We want to help you make these spaces safe and appealing. Here are our summer safety and beautification tips.

Safety First

Ideally, in the spring (but anytime works), look closely at your porch and deck’s structure. Are there any loose boards? Nails popping? Did the cement crack?

Look at all the doors. Do the locks and latches work? How are the hinges holding up? If you identify any problems, take care of them right away.

Next, clean these areas. Sweep first, followed by power washing. Be sure to pay attention to mold and mildew and use the appropriate cleaner to remove them.

Use a suitable waterproof sealant to repel mold if you have a wooden deck.

Treat for insects as often they will come into your house via someone’s shoes or sandals. Having termites and other Wood Destroying Insects in your home can cause real problems down the line.

Consider adding outdoor lighting around your walkway, porch, and deck. Lighting will help guests easily see your steps when entering or leaving your home.

Add a handrail if there are more than a few steps up to the deck or porch. If the steps are wooden, consider putting traction strips on the steps to avoid falls.

Check your house numbers. Be sure you can see them from the street during the day and at night. You may want to prune back bushes or trees or replace the numbers if you cannot.

Wear appropriate footwear to avoid slips and falls or splinters from the deck.

Now, you are ready for beautification.

Beautify Your Deck and Porch

Take your large items out of storage. Next, inspect your porch and deck furniture – is it holding up well or needing repair or a paint job? Finally, consider upgrading your cushions or pillows to more colorful patterns.

Add outdoor artwork, a fountain, or outside string lights on the deck.

For the front area, consider painting the front door. Popular colors are navy blue, dark gray, or charcoal. Add a new welcome mat and a seasonal wreath.

For both areas, invest in potted flowers and plants. Please make sure they are colorful and have different textures.
